It just so happens that our friends Cynthia and Joe Amon are in Beaver Creek this week, about 30 miles west of Breckenridge. Cynthia is the Public Relations Director of Gore’s outerwear division (all that cool clothing that breathes but keeps you dry) and she created the Trans Rockies Challenge about 5 years ago. Gore’s corporate philosophy is to encourage their employees to work together in teams. The Trans Rockies Challenge is a team race as well. It spans 6 days and 120 plus miles of running up and down the Rockies at elevations as high as 12,000 feet!
We attended the final awards banquet and happened to sit at a table with Neil Rhodes from the UK. Neil was a professional chef when in 2003 he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and after recovering and realizing that he’d taken 6 days vacation in the past 7 years, sold his business and went about the task of collecting world records. In fact, he holds 9 world records and is just about to earn his 10th once he completes a 4th mountain event in 8 weeks. In that span he will have traversed 930 miles of mountains, 180,000 feet of ascent, 6 countries and 2 continents. Here’s Neil:
Doesn’t he look like he’s having fun? I have to tell you, all the amazing athletes we met had happy faces. And why? Because our friend Cynthia Amon is the best in the business!!!
